The best screenshot apps, honestly

“Screenshot app” covers at least four different jobs — stitching, framing, annotating and redacting — and almost no app is best at more than two. Here is what each one is genuinely good at, including where they beat ScreenCandy.

We make ScreenCandy. It is the eighth entry on this page, not the first, and it is not the right answer for most of the jobs below.

On iPhone

Best screenshot apps for iOS

Picsew

iOS · best for long screenshots. Stitches a run of screenshots into one tall image, vertically or horizontally, and will capture a whole web page in one go. If the job is a chat thread or a long settings page, this is the specialist and ScreenCandy does not compete with it.

Tailor

iOS · best for stitching with zero effort. Reads the screenshots already in your camera roll, works out which ones belong together, and joins them automatically. Less control than Picsew, far less thinking. The right pick when you just want the conversation as one image.

Annotable

iOS · best for serious annotation. The deepest annotation toolset on iOS — magnifier loupes, spotlight, mosaic and blur, shapes, measurement — with fine control over every object. If annotating is the work, it goes further than ScreenCandy does.

On Android

Best screenshot apps for Android

Snapmod

Android · best for device mockups. Drops a screenshot into a realistic phone frame with a background behind it, which is exactly what a Play Store listing or a landing page wants. Frame-first, where ScreenCandy is composition-first.

Screener

Android · best for fast framed marketing shots. A long-standing, no-nonsense framing app: pick a device, pick a background, done. Handles batches well, which matters when a listing needs eight images that match.

Shots

Android · best for a quick beautified background. A screenshot beautifier in the same family as the browser tools — gradient or colour ground, rounded corners, shadow — without leaving the phone. The closest Android app to what ScreenCandy does for backgrounds.

Snap Markup

iOS and Android · best for plain, fast markup. Arrows, text, shapes, blur, crop — no backgrounds, no styling, no learning curve. If all you ever do is circle the broken thing and send it to a developer, this does that and nothing else.

ScreenCandy

iOS and Android · best for compose, mark up and redact in one pass. Share a screenshot to it and it opens already composed: 30 built-in looks, 6 background modes, 11 CandyMark tools, and blur or pixelate redaction flattened into the export. Everything is on-device — no account, no upload, no analytics. It does not stitch, it does not build device mockups, and it does not take the screenshot for you.

The editor already on your phone

iOS and Android · best for free and instant. iOS Markup and the Android screenshot editor are one tap from the capture and cost nothing. They crop, draw and add text. iOS Markup cannot blur at all, and neither adds a background — which is the whole reason the rest of this list exists.

On the desktop

Best screenshot apps for Mac and Windows

macOS

CleanShot X

The category benchmark on a Mac: capture, scrolling capture, screen recording, OCR, annotation and cloud share links in one tool. There is no iPhone or Android version, which is why people keep searching for one. If you are at a Mac, this is the answer.

macOS

Xnapper

Beautifies a capture automatically — balances the crop, adds a background — and can find and hide sensitive text such as emails for you. The automatic redaction is genuinely clever, and nothing on mobile does it for you.

macOS

Shottr

Small, fast and free to start: scrolling capture, OCR, pixel measurement and annotation, with almost no weight. The pick when CleanShot X is more app than the job needs.

macOS and Windows

Snagit

The documentation workhorse. Capture and recording plus templates, step-by-step numbering and reusable layouts, built for teams writing manuals and training material. Heavier and pricier than the rest, and still the right tool for that job.

What each job actually needs

Most “best screenshot app” disagreements are really four separate questions with four different answers.

Where ScreenCandy loses

Being straight about this is the point of the page. Several apps above are better than ScreenCandy at their own job.

Where ScreenCandy wins

Composing, marking up and redacting in one pass, on the phone

Every other app on this list does one of those three well and hands you off for the rest. Share a screenshot to ScreenCandy and it opens already composed; blur what should not be public, point at what should, and post — without moving the file to a desktop or uploading it anywhere.

A note on web tools

The free browser beautifiers are good, and they are uploads

If the screenshot is already on a laptop, a free web tool will put a gradient behind it in seconds. Just be clear about the trade: the unedited image goes to someone else's server first, which is the wrong move for a bank balance or a DM thread.

If the job is posting it,
try ours.

Free on iOS and Android. If the job is stitching, framing or recording, one of the apps above is the better answer.
